Today is supposedly Blue Monday...the day when more people feel a sense of depression than any other day of the year. I was feeling pretty good, until...I came home and decided to treat myself to two items off my wishlist - the oversized blue clutch and the art-deco necklace. THEY ARE SOLD OUT! Sometimes spreading the word of style doesn't pay dividends!! No...I am not depressed or arrogant enough to think that my advertising alone would cause a stock outage; just slightly annoyed that I didn't purchase such great bargains while I had the chance. I am also pleased that others may agree with my style choices. Now, I am at a slight loss, as I am unable to find a cool, oversized clutch. Any help would be much appreciated.

It's the perennial problem...when I have no money, lots of fripperies catch my eye! I am too magpie like for my own good! So to ease my tension and stress over my lack of funds, I have decided to compile a small wish list to exorcise my woe! (Click on above picture to enlarge)

1. Cheap Monday dark, used-wash, skinny jeans from Urban Outifitters.
They do exactly what is says on the tin - they are cheap (£40) and have a great skinny fit.
2. Oversized navy patent clutch from Topshop.
I have been seeking an extra-large clutch for a few weeks now and this one fits the bill perfectly.
3. Exaggerated art-deco pendant from Urban Outfitters.
A complete bargain at only £4 and suits my colour mood of black and gold.
4. Vintage tulip tube dress, also by Urban Outfitters.
I adore the colour, azure blue suits my skin-tone beautifully (transparent alabaster at this time of year...mmm, not so attractive!)
5. Thin gold plait belt, also by Urban Outfitters.
Great for making a loose black dress into an empire line wonder.
6. Ball clip, cross-body bag from Topshop.
Cross body is the new clutch (can't believe I just wrote that!!), plus it would be a great accompaniment to the azure blue dress.

All together we are looking at £150ish...which I think is pretty good for such a versatile bag of goodies. My bank balance however, would not agree! I know £150 isn't exorbitant, especially compared to a designer bag but Christmas and the new year have hurt my chip-and-pin and it would like a rest. Does an old, unused, credit card deserve and airing? We'll have to wait and see!

Stella McCartney moves into underwear.

V Magazine has just published some of the first photos of Stella McCartney's forthcoming lingerie collection. Stella has teamed up with Bendon, New Zealand's premiere lingerie manufacturer for her first range in undergarments. The Sunday Times Style Magazine has even put the launch of the range on their "Going Up" list. There is an incredible amount of hype surrounding this launch but it is difficult to see the true quality through these ads. I am loving the mix and match, bra/knicker combinations and the cute keyhole racer-back bras. I have a funny feeling that I won't get the opportunity to see the collection any time soon, as I'm sure they will fly out of the stores and straight on to eBay within a few hours. If I do however, get lucky and sneak-a-peek, I will let you know the truth behind the hype.

Zoemou - Oversized neckwear.

Ultra-large neck attire has been a key feature of the catwalk this season. Australian designer Zoe Sernack, has her own bold interpretation of this trend with her brand Zoemou, meaning "my life" in Greek. I would call her pieces, "subtly striking." Juliette Has a Gun holds is an enigmatic brand from Romano Ricci of the famous Nina Ricci fashion family. If branding makes a product then Ricci's team have achieved an unadulterated success. As I said, the brand is enigmatic; I have never even smelt the fragrances, yet the sublime packaging, quirky typeface and luxurious website, have all my attention. The Juliette in question is of the Shakespearian fame and is the elusive persona behind each fragrance. I will reserve my full judgement until I have smelt the perfumes in question but so far I am enthralled.

Cooperativedesigns - A team made in wool heaven.

Annalisa Dunn and Dorothee Hagemann met on the MA Fashion course at Central St Martins in 2007. Upon graduation they joined forces to create cooperativedesigns. They juxtapose wool and jersey, texture and pattern to create some truly unique pieces. Their website delights me and their looks, although seemingly avant-garde, are also very wearable and available in block colours and black if necessary. Anja Rubik - A model sensation.

Hair...such an important commodity for most women, it defines who they are. Anja Rubik is one of my favourite models as she has broken out of that mold - her hair no longer defines who she is. Her cropped hair makes such a difference to whom she is as a model, it's as if restrictions have been lifted. She is able to be edgy, quirky and even almost safely conventional in the Chanel ads. Below, is her stunning look that for me, has made her a much more complete model, in a different way to Agyness Deyn.

Sooooo, I have to now reveal some secrets, that will show what a dweeb I really am...but all in the name of fashion! I was enthralled by the first few series of The O.C., it was easy to watch and definitely easy on the eye. I loved seeing the adventures of Summer and Marissa and the inappropriate school wardrobes they showcased. I lost interest as the series were churned out, it became a little bland. So imagine my glee when the CW network rolled out Gossip Girl.

I was a little sceptical at first. Yes, the plot lines are ridiculous, the story revolves around spoilt, stuck up trust-fund teenagers (there is of course a "poorer" family to balance the moral see-saw)...but the clothes - very Sex in the City for teens. The wardrobes are a designer explosion! The stylist must have an exorbitant budget and is is showcased really well. Serena Van Der Woodson (yes....that is really the character's name, indicative of the caliber of show I am discussing!) lives in a hotel (as you do!) and has a wardrobe to die for. The actress that is Serena, Blake Lively, has transfered this inane style to her daily life. Below left, is a piece from an edition of NYLON magazine. It was published last summer to highlight up and coming stars in young Hollywood. Below right, is Miss. Lively in Chanel, at The Nuit de Diamants, hosted by the uber-brand itself. It is always pleasing to see that off-screen, these potential style icons, can also live up to the hype.

So, indulge in some exaggerated plot-lines and feast your eyes on the preview of Gossip Girl below, just don't tell anyone where your style-inspiration originated! Oh, one warning...Kristen Bell, of Veronica Mars/Heroes fame, narrates parts of the episodes. She is celebrity blogger "Gossip Girl" and her tag-line, "xoxo Gossip Girl," may drive you to distraction.

Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell grace the cover of French Vogue.

It feels like a seminal moment in fashion and definitely looks very beautiful, although Naomi doesn't quite look herself; I smell a little photoshop! Kate of course dazzles and shows that her age means nothing, her cool means everything. I haven't been the biggest fan of Kate's Topshop collaborations; I did buy a beautiful chiffon bird scarf. I have however, been a fan of Kate's birthday style; carrying off gold star fashion face paint, style genius.

A few weeks ago I posted about my eager sense of anticipation, in light of the announcement that Kirsten Dunst would be the new face of Miu Miu. So was my anticipation justified or have I been left in a state of longing disappointment? The truth is I feel a sense of emotional ambivolence. At first look, they are too similar to Lyndsey Lohan's offering for the brand; lush and rich in colour, with a mid-night blue darkness. But they are "growers" - on closer inspection there is an air of cuteness, a fairy tale lightness, juxtaposed with a feel of naughtiness, all against the beautiful palette of Kirsten's porcelain skin. The other thing I tend to forget when celebrities front a brand, is that it is about the clothes/product, are they showcased well? In this case, I'd have to say yes. I adore the sunglasses above and feel my eye drawn slowly towards the oversized grey bag, via Miss. Dunst. So overall I would have to conclude that this campaign is a success but it wasn't the new, more quirky direction I was expecting from Miu Miu, in light of their alternative choice of model.

A wonder of a dress from Le Train Bleu.

Sometimes the way a dress is presented can make a huge difference to its appeal. This House of Elliot dress is shown in three guises on Le Train Bleu. Left, on Erica Davies at a recent runway show; middle, on the store's model and left, in a standard presentation photograph. As we move to the left the dress loses some appeal to me, proving that seeing a look "in action", so to speak, can pay dividends for an online store. ASOS have proved the pioneers in showing a piece in its full glory, with their catwalk presentations (see here and click on the catwalk link). Those that are regular readers will know of my appreciation for Le Train Bleu, so take a look at all their new arrivals here.

My search for the unique has lead me to Ndeur. Mathieu Missiaen has created a brand around his hand painted designs, including these truly original shoes. The self-titled "graphist" from Canada has produced some bold print shoes, that are sure to get you noticed. They may not be to my style but Mathieu's originality has to be applauded. Rue du Mail is one of my favourite design houses. Based in the all that is the heart of fashion, Paris, Martine Sitbon has so far produced two highly innovative collections. The look is simple, yet complicated - a perfect design contradiction. There are intricate details combined with simple lines and elegance. Above are some structured pieces from the autumn/winter collection and below are some more floaty, erethral looks from spring/summer 2008. The appeal is definitely modern but seems to be seeped in history, especially in the case of the constructed pieces above. Suzie Style Bubble recommended Teen Vogue's Snapshot Blog to her readers and I have to ashamedly admit that I feel such guilty pleasure in my enjoyment of it! Young fashionistas submit their photographs to Teen Vogue, along with their style inspiration and a bit of an "about-me" blurb. At times, these teens can seem very spoilt, with some seriously pricey designer items on their "what I'm wearing" list...but for the most part they are shining examples of how to create a definitive style on a budget. They present their pictures in an innovative, creative way and it is quite surprising how self-aware these teens actually are. Take a look and see if you are sucked in too!

I am not a fan of Victoria Beckham; for the same reasons as most people but mainly because in my mind fashion and style need to be in some way organic, natural. Mrs. Beckham's style is so far removed from that ideal that is virtually impossible for me to respect her look. She is over-stylised, trying far to hard to adhere to any current trend. So when she was announced as the new face of Marc Jacobs, I was slightly worried as to what the result may be. Here it is. Victoria is "the legs" of Monsieur Jacobs. We all have seen Marc Jacobs unique, funny side with his camel toe costume but is this a worthy campaign? It will definitely get Marc what he wants - maximum publicity...which is why I was in a quandary about this post...by tomorrow it will be in every magazine and newspaper across the western world. What do you think?

Forget resolutions, my January has begun with an aim...leave the house successfully and in a healthy state. Yes, the misery that is the British flu epidemic has struck me down. Today is the only day that I've manage to muster the enthusiasm to move, let alone blog. So, life seems slightly dull but chinks of colour are slowly starting to slip into my life. My fashion mood could be represented by Agyness at Hilfiger and Facehunter, Yvan above. The tone is generally grey, muted, subdued even but the recovery on the horizon is looking bright. I adore Yvan's patent, laceless, red delights and Agnes' bold splash of yellow is somehow outshone by her red accessories. So my welcome to 2008 was a little mucus-ridden but my road to sinus clarity will be walked in red.

Gucci's cruise campaign for 2008 evokes many feelings of nostalgia. It has a definitive 70's vibe to its photography, a real sense of "hommage" to Sophia Lauren with California gold added into the mix. It makes me want to run to the sun, which I feel compelled to do tomorrow! I'm off to España to ring in the New Year with a little touch of heat and a lack of rain. The is a small post of appreciation for Freja Beha Erichsen. Whenever I watch the CK in2u ads (hate the abreviated name!), I am shocked by how much her true beauty and charisma stand out, despite the seeming lack of styling and make-up. She has featured on a plethora of catwalks and in many ad campaigns. If variety and diversity is the key to longevity in the model world, expect to see a lot more of Freja in 2008.

Anja Austa have sent me a lot of emails about their designs and on closer inspection, Anja's designs are truly inspirational. What has delighted my eyes the most has to be the emphasis on shape, back details are always a very subtle design piece of wonderment. Anja is a strange enigma to me and I haven't been able to find many details on this designer (mainly as their website is a little defunct!), but see more for yourself on the aforementioned site.

2007 - The year of the non-plastic bag.

A major player in the fashion money making stakes has to be the revolt against the plastic bag...urggghh, plastic, environmentally unfriendly plus faaaarrr less interesting than the current hype. If I had to choose a favourite it would have to be the New Shopping Bag, by Susan Bijl available from Designboom. The main reason I love it is that I would actually use it as a shopping bag. I wouldn't be too frightened to place food inside and risk it getting stained or smelly; it's nylon i.e. wipe clean!! I also wouldn't feel compelled to put it put it on eBay and quintuple my money! Jenny Lewis - Rilo Kiley's jewel.

One of my favourite albums of 2007 has to be Rilo Kiley's Under the Backlight. It's hard to describe their sound but "ironic pop" sums it up for me. An added part of Rilo Kiley's appeal for me is their lead singer, Jenny Lewis' unimitable sense of style. This year Jenny has championed the hot pant, be it in mini-unitard form or high waisted delight. Jenny's style spans the decades but definitely has a 70's edge of late. Thakoon Panichgul has always impressed me with his clothing designs but now he offers UV protection in the form of a gorgeously retro sunglasses collection. Price wise, I'm not sure sort of hole these glasses would burn in my pocket but they are beautiful and there is no harm in a sneaky peek ready for the first glimpses of sun.

Louise Gray eleviates the darkness.

The cold wintery days take the luster and shine out of everything; life seems subdued, somewhat duller. Today the view from my window had a pale brown feel to it and I went on the fashion hunt to brighten it up. Louise Gray takes colour, fashion and fun, diffusing them to create a dazzling line of clothing. Louise's design pedigree is undeniable - she studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London for an MA in Fashion - Textiles. Louise worked for two seasons at Peter Jensen completing detailed embroidery subsequently going on to win an internal Saint Martins competition for Chloe, Paris. My favourite piece is definitely the electric blue eyelash dress, left; this tongue-in-cheek delight is truly fashion forward. Bat For Lashes - A different level of cool.

Bat For Lashes are a favourite musical delight of mine and their lead singer, Natasha Khan, is a true design inspiration. Her full range of abilities is aptly described on their website as, "a singer/ songwriter, multi- instrumentalist and visual artist". Her visual appeal and that of her band is undeniable. Their influences, both stylistic and musical, span the decades and push the conventional boundaries. If you get a chance peruse their website and fully experience the multi-faceted joy that is Bat For Lashes.

Office - Helping with the Christmas shoe dilema.

Christmas can be a difficult party season for the tall. Shoes present me with a daily dilema but my anxiety increases two-fold during the festive season. I wear flats - my feet are the size of small boats, so they seem the obvious choice. BUT Christmas party wear does not lend itself to the wearing of my usual maritime specials, you are supposed to do heels. have placed a small chink of light at the end of my shoe tunnel. Heels can still look quirky, even if you are tall and they are kind enough to offer me a variety of heel heights to ease my head bump potential. What I like about Office is that they offer you a look book so you can preview your purchase on a real foot of a real human cool person (see above)!

I've been on my travels, popping to some gigs, museum visiting and catching up with friends. My highlights have to be another astounding Interpol gig, this time in Alexandra Palace and an amazingly intimate Sia gig on the good ship Thekla in Bristol's Mud Dock. Thekla Social is an old Baltic coaster ship, converted by an eccentric musician to provide a truly unique music venue. I've extolled the virtues of Interpol here, Sia is yet to feature on Random Fashion Coolness but she definitely deserves a mention. Sia is famous for her collaborations with Zero 7 but her solo work is truly outstanding and her voice a piece of true joy. The set design was also amazing, a totally kitsch explosion of colour. ID Magazine appreciation post - Enticing Covers.

Much fuss was made over the recent Cate Blanchett cover of ID magazine but ID has been producing bold, innovative and striking covers for over 20 years. I know a magazine is far more than its cover but ID has consistently produced iconic covers that definitely influence the purchaser's choice. Here are a few of my personal favourites. They aren't all necessarily the brightest or the boldest, just the ones that impacted on me the most. It's strange that among the varied collection here, even Kate Moss' more subtle covers, really stand out.

Twenty8Twelve - Talent behind the hype.

Twenty8Twelve has received publicity largely for its strong celebrity link but I was intrigued to see what Sienna Miller and her sister, Savannah, actually have to offer. Perusing the website it is difficult not to appreciate the obvious elegance of the looks. The photography itself is stunning, with a truly artistic twist; showcasing beautifully many very "on-trend" pieces. Boyish formality is encompassed in the modern, slimline tuxedo. Block colour dazzles beautifully off the olive green wall. I shall reserve true judgement until I observe the pieces in person but I can definitely look beyond the Miller brand.

The Future of Denim - The 18th Amendment.

18th Amendment represents all that is "now" about denim. Their styles sweep the spectrum of all the current trends in denim; from skyscraper high waisted to super-skinny. The inspiration behind the brand has really caught my attention. I cannot rewrite it, or surmise it adequately, so here's a screen-shot from their website (below). Their name seems to mean so much more now.

Future Classics - Layered Envy.

I have always lusted after pieces by Future Classics, they epitomise all that is fashion forward and yet wardrobe essentials at the same time. Layering = edgy to me; Future Classics' designs typify their name. This juxtaposition is summed up perfectly on their website,

I adore perusing Foundations Garments Inc. It is a unique site, from which you can trawl through pieces by a plethora of new/up and coming designers. Leanimal by Leanne Marshall, is this month's featured designer and rightly so. I am enthralled by her one off pieces that are truly modular and certainly a visual delight. Her pieces feature abstract threading details, quilting-type patterns, and unusual combinations of fabrics and textures - an eclectic mix that equals near perfection. E.V.O.D. - Simplicity=Fashion

E.V.O.D. jewellery design is the work of Mandy Wu. Her work is truly eclectic but it is the simplicity of these two brooches that stands out for me. Many moons ago I dabbled in the heights of trolley-dollyism, as a flight attendant. The power of "the badge + uniform" could be quite astounding : passengers would address me by my first name in a bid to break down the boundaries of formality (I fitted the perfect air-hostess stereotype by often reacting with shock, "Have I met you before? Do I know you?" were often among my moronic responses!) Therefore statement badges have always appealed to me. Anti Landfill Fashion - suitcases and biscuit boxes get a make-over.

Recycling is very "now" but I love the innovative nature behind these uncommonly beautiful fashion accessories by Kirsty Kirkpatrick. On the left we have the biscuit box graphic wooden and leather necklace and on the right the blue vinyl graphic flower necklace, made from a suitcase! Ceramic Badges - Another Designboom favourite.

These ceramic badges, by Austrian duo Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler are made from vintage, neglected porcelain plates found on flea markets and in charity shops. The duo then puts a modern day spin on recycling. Selected areas of the plates are carefully cut by hand with a diamond drill, sanded by hand and then glued to a pin. The result, each badge is completely unique. Such a cool idea! Designboom triumphs again.

The dawn of winter doesn't normally draw me to the darker side but this year grey seems to be pulling me away from the light. Above are my three "must purchase soon" items. I have added some summer hues to the background, in a feeble bid to make them seem less shadowy. Erdem is a name I've seen floating around several magazines recently. I'd never heard of this fashion brand before, therefore further investigation was required. Their website is a revelation. It showcases an eclectic mix of shape and style and makes me yearn for summer as the U.K.'s dark nights draw in. The hints of colour, bold prints and mix of fabrics offer everything that appeals to me in a collection. I have been unable to find an online stockist yet but on their website is a list of their above ground stores. Keep your eye on Erdem, I feel a bright future beckons...or maybe just a hint of colour.

FrostFrench has always been a brand with top celebrity credentials. Sadie Frost, ex-wife of Jude Law, is the brand's co-founder and Kate Moss famously got down to her FF knickers for one of their fashion shows. FrostFrench is so much more than a celebrity favourite. Their looks are relatively affordable, while still maintaining a strong sense of originality, effortlessly fusing the contemporary with the traditional. So, in my world, Sadie Frost and Jemima French are more than "the celebrity's friend", they are a true up-and-coming design duo.

There are posts to come from my Barcelonian experience but here is something that has caught my eye since my return. Space NK are producing their own beauty range, which would add more than a hint of coolness to any bathroom or dressing table. I adore the design value that these products offer. This is my problem; sometimes the "value for money" ethic behind beauty products is lost on me. "Is it pretty to look at?", tends to be my first question, "Does it work?", tends to be my second...so wrong! Well apparently these products work and look beautiful; everything I require!

I adore the purple hue, exaggerated angles and beautiful use of shadow. Missoni becomes so much more than a bold print.

Pushing Daisies...a visual delight.

Pushing Daisies is a gem of a show on the US ABC network. I never feel compelled to blog about television shows but Pushing Daisies is so visually stunning, it has to be commented upon. It is filmed in the vein of Amelie and is a concentrated bubble of colour à la Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory but it is the fashion that blows me away. Anna Friel's character is a impeccable style icon, dressed to perfection in each scene. There are no screen shots that accurately depict this fact but I assure you, watch and you will agree. The plotline - genius! but I shall not give it away. I am not sure when Pushing Daisies will grace British screens but there are plenty of places to "share" it and lots of You Tube clips. This little one speaks for itself. Vivienne Westwood's designs blow me away. Coggles are stocking what I can only consider my dream dress, below (if it weren't for the price tag of £2,555!). But it is Miss. Westwood's new add campaign that has caught my attention. She has channeled her inner cave woman and made a very organic, back to basics set of print adds, with a personal appearance to boot. I adore the unusual use of bones as accessories and the "minimal" dirt make-up. Fashion must be fun and Vivienne Westwood's tongue-in-cheek viewpoint is so refreshing. Feast your eyes on what Vivienne has to offer here and start some serious penny pinching now!

...the answer is easy VERY COOL. I have headwear issues. Even when I ski I feel uncomfortable in my woolly hat. It may be my asymetrical ears or misshapen head but more likely it is the attention that headwear can bring. Sometimes it is unwanted, people misunderstand your fashion choice. Sometimes it is appreciative, a mutual love of the "different". I would looovvve to be cool enough to get away with these looks below but my fashion courage (and more importantly my self-esteem) aren't that high yet! I often find it hard to find a truly original piece of jewellery, something no-one else will have. Hidden Art has offered me a possible accessories haven. They sell original pieces by a variety of designers that have to be unique, special or distinctive. They have many sections but the jewellery has to be my favourite, especially the Frida Kahlo inspired hand earrings and the Virgin Mary brooch selection - so weird, so different! Illustrative design is one of my favourite artistic media, so I was bowled away by Laura McCafferty's stand at 100% Design. Laura creates beautiful textile artworks that aren't shown in their true glory via the pixelated screen. I love individual pieces translated into 3D art forms, especially the red military trench. Melanie Haarhaus' aim is to find individuality in a truly complex world. She definitely succeeds with her truly unique designs...all injected with a sense of humour. Her website explains,

We live in a confusingly complex world. Every individual, incident or item presents itself in a different manner to different observers. Viewed from one angle a facet may shine all the brighter, while from another it will disappear into the shadows.

I adore the ironic and iconic "Hello from Moscow" brooch above - a true feeling of fun can define fashion for me. Melanie's humour is evident in her bio; coming from a small Bavarian town of 30 inhabitants, she says how disappointed she was to discover, "not one dwarf among them!" Swoon - Fashionably cool paper art.

Fashion hides in many guises, one being unconventional art. I adore the literal "cut out and paste" aesthetic to Swoon's graffiti. Her form of art is definitely not pedestrian but on the pavement is where her audience hides. Her work becomes part of its surroundings, as the paper discolours and curls, it decomposes into part of the street. I have posted before about the Parisian wonder that is Fafi; her art moved into collaborations with major manufacturers. Her New York counterpart, Swoon, may currently resist commercial temptation but I predict it won't be long before Swoon's design talent is channeled away from the street. Caravan - A Gem in Spitalfields.

Caravan is a gem of a boutique in Spitalfields, one of my favourite areas of Londinium. I was lucky enough to meet its founder in her vintage Citroën H-Van - what an inspirational retail guru. Emily Chalmers was kind enough to take time out to tell me all about her shop and the ethos behind her stock choices. Her shop is a modern day Aladdin's Cave, littered with eclectic joy; if it weren't for the fact I arrived there at 5.30, just before the 6pm closure, I would have gladly spent the day on a super rummage. The Caravan "van" is a thing of childhood dreams. A kitsch menagerie of loveliness, guarded by some seriously menacing crows. I worry about surcoming to all news trends...but I'm afraid the myriad of brogues available have truly sucked me in. Above left, are pairs from Office, relatively reasonably priced at £60. Urban Outfitters offer a more expensive but no less stylish version, at £100 - their main appeal for me is the colour, glorious grey (a rather juxtaposed phrase for some!) So one new trend definitely has my support.

Ten Again at 100% Design - Unusual Sunglasses.

In 2006, designer Chris Jackson invited Ten London based designers to illustrate their views on the subject of sustainability within the capital. The designers were restricted to work within a 10KM radius of their studios to utilise resources and scavenge materials, with a budget of £10. The resulting objects diverse and fresh, were displayed within 100% Design. After rave reviews and two awards, the same 10 designers reformed for ‘Ten Again’ 2007. Under the same theme of sustainability, the designers produced 10 objects for 100% Design.

Of this group, Stephen Bretland offered us these sunglasses. At first glance, above, they are simple cardboard specs (in the style of the old 3D glances). On further inspection a more dark, ingenious, design element is revealed...each is made from a Stevie Wonder LP cover! I found myself in a state of quandary - yes, Monsieur Wonder is well know for wearing sunglasses but to disguise/aid his blindness, quite a juxtaposition in ideals! Therefore, are these glasses ironic fashion genius, or do they hold a darker, more twisted edge! Keep up to date with Stephen's work here and make your own mind up! Click on the images to enlarge.

I rarely post about the beauty industry but the strong design ethic behind Lipstick Queen has convinced me to change my ways. Poppy, the lady behind the Queen, began the brand after a fruitless search for lipsticks, aged just 18. I always feel a greater respect for those that reveal their inspiration, especially in pictorial form, as Poppy shows us here on the left. At the Designer's Block one stall that really stood out was Miss Geschick & Lady Lapus. This German duo's "hairy" underwear shocked my eyes slightly, definitely sparking my interest! The products I truly love are above, aptly named "Chewy Beauty" (hair clips and badges) and "Disaster". Another favourite you must check out is kotztierchen - they are puking pets; not an attractive prospect but what a cool name! I think it is my inherently clumsy nature that attracts me to making an eventful incident into a piece of fashionable art! See their e-store here and marvel at their concept below.

Monacca - Natural Japanese Design

Yanase cedar offers many design opportunities but who would have thought handbags would be one of those possibilities. At the 100% show, Monacca's stall was a wooden oasis in a dessert of new plastics. The stall was made up of raised wooden paneling, mirrored by their designs. See their design aesthetic here.

Block - Acrylic designs.

Here's another one from 100% Design...Block, designs in acrylic. My eye was drawn to their very quirky stall, see photos below (click to enlarge); their use of traditional frames, filled with modern, hazy images. Block's website showcases all their acrylic products, as well as stockists. Above is their full colour spectrum and my favourite products - their rings and bracelets. My visit to Block's stall was also my first experience of "trade snobism". At the 100% Design show, you had to wear a badge, stating whether or not you were a trade stockist or "civilian visitor". As a blogger, I was not trade and definitely treated accordingly. When asking for leaflets, stall holders would first, very blatantly check out my badge, before handing whatever was nearby. "Trade" badge holders received a very different level of care, to some extent understandably, as the economic future of the brand rests in their sales. I felt though that some stall-holders should definitely treat all visitors in the same way, as you never know what "power" the civilians may wield (I am not referring to myself here, just other well-respected bloggers in general). Small rant over ;) !

Here's a little discovery from the Designer's Block - Mr. Jones Watches. These amazing timepieces not only offer hours and minutes but also a statement to live by, decision making help and an extra conscience. My favourite has to be the Mantra which alternates between, a very positive statement (e.g. you are amazing) with a very negative one (e.g. nobody likes you). Its aim is, "to make the arrogant person more humble and the humble more confident." A modern day self-esteem equaliser for your wrist! Above are my own pictures (click to enlarge) from the Designer's Block, where the watches were displayed incredibly effectively - in a darkened corridor, within huge light boxes. A note to the lovely Clarice - I think this is the very watch you are looking for.

American Apparel...a disappointing online experience.

I have extolled the virtues of American Apparel from the rooftops (see my many posts here)...but I have been let down by my own retail experience with their UK online branch. I received a fab, lapis colour, zip up sweat fleece 2 weeks ago, only to realise I had been charged twice for the item. Fine, an easy mistake to make...but getting in touch with American Apparel in the UK is as easy as finding vintage Chanel in Oxfam. I have left 4 telephone messages, sent 2 emails via their online contact form and emailed the .net address they quote on their answering machine. Almost 2 weeks later and still no response! Frustrating and annoying...yes, very!

100% Design - Takumi's brand of kitsch.

There were lots of innovative fashion finds at the Earl's Court show - one of my favourites were the hairglasses by Takumi (Headbands in the shape of sunglasses). The reason behind this choice, a personal quibble. I am not a fan of sunglasses as a headband and I cannot fully explain why. I often see people struggling to focus in the bright light, while wearing their sunglasses as a hair restraint OR the opposite, winter gloom with sunglasses on head. It's irrational, I know but inexplicably annoying. I think it stems from some stern, over-repeated advice from my childhood optician..."never wear your glasses/sunglasses upon head as it will loosen them, gradually damaging the arms." He said he'd be able to tell if I'd been misusing my eye-wear and would refuse to fix it! So here comes Takumi's design - sunglasses that are not sunglasses but hairglasses. A £10 piece of genius and a solution to my irritation.

Antoni & Alison always astound me with the originality of their product. These new scarves are no exception. An abstract creation and a still life, both reproduced on silk scarves, fill me with delight. I very rarely leave the house sans-scarf, so it is refreshing to see some unique designs, that would be equally at home around the neck or hung on a wall. Art and fashion collide with Antoni & Alison.

Almost every retailer is riding the coat-tails of the "This is not a a Plastic Bag" phenomenon. They are all realising how great this can be for: a. the environment, b. their profits and c. free publicity. I do like this version by American Apparel. Bertie's Fall Campaign - I'm rushing out to buy some wool tights tomorrow!

Bertie's new wintery ad campaign, coupled with the erratic British weather, have set my mind to "cold" dressing. My tights are only ever of the opaque variety but I haven't donned a pair for quite a few months now - the grey wool on show in Bertie's new ads have rekindled my love of the tight, so a pair shall be purchased soon. Bertie have also shown me the way forward in footwear. My feet have been free all summer, contained only by the narrowest pieces of flip-flop leather, so the prospect of imprisoning them again can be slightly daunting. Regular readers of my blog will understand my appreciation and general fawning over 3.1 Phillip Lim. As London fashion week begins in earnest, I am now digesting the delights that were on offer during New York's semaine. Elegance, varying lengths and splashes of colour were highlight's of Lim's collection and his understated elegance continues to delight. Flashes of banana yellow could be spotted peeping out in accessories, as well as block colour dresses and blouses. I also adore his use of navy as a base colour as opposed to black, such a great compliment to the deep peaches and yellows. Chan Marshall, the style behind Cat Power.

I feel there has been a distinctly musical vibe to Random Fashion Coolness of late, which continues today. Cat Power or Chan (pronounced "Shaun") Marshall is as juxtaposed as her names. A fashion icon, championed by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Chan seems equally comfortable in her laid back, stage uniform of jeans and shirts. High end fashion vedette to gruff, angelic voiced performer - her talents span the celebrity spectrum. She reportedly caught the attention of Lagerfeld while smoking outside a New York hotel; he approached her, saying, "Only a certain type of woman can look glamorous when smoking" and thus her model alter-ego was born. Her music delights my mind and must be listened to and as for her fashion future, watch this space. See her official website here.

I am a slave to the details and Marc Jacobs certainly didn't disappoint at New York fashion week. The catwalk was a true performance in every sense of the word but for me, the little quirks truly jumped out. Two of the eye-catchers were the oddly angled heals and emotive masks. Plastiscines - Girl rock gets cooler.

I have debated whether or not to publish this post...I began writing this post yesterday and decided not to publish about a band that I wasn't musically aware of. I have spent the day listening to selected tracks, only to discover that the Sunday Times' Style section has featured a small article about them...but here's how my original post went (pre-Times!). The Plastiscines are a French Parisienne band whose fashion credentials are obvious from the first glance. Thankfully their music doesn't fail to deliver either. It is a joy to see a European girl rock group with their own, individual sense of style as opposed to some of the over-stylised pop clones that we have all become so accustomed to. Pussy Home Boutique - Canned Brighton.

Pussy Home Boutique, doesn't err on the side of erotic as the name suggests but is the home of Brighton kitsch online. A fab e-store that also now also sells its wares through Topshop, Pussy Home Boutique has long been a favourite of mine. It stocks Paul Frank and Tatty Devine along with many other leading brands and its own unique pieces. Above are two of my fave Tatty Devine necklaces - I have just ordered the "Specklace" as it is out-of-stock on Tatty's own site. Below is an example of the quirkiness the store embodies - would you like a 70's style wallscene? Haven't been able to find one since 1979? Are your walls particularly blank? Laundryroom is a great e-store find. I have posted about the joy of Humanoid clothing before and Laundryroom is one of their UK stockists. They don't have an extensive range but each item they stock is extremely unique and seems almost handpicked. Gaze at the washing line and see the wonders on offer.

365 on Flickr.

A now popular pastime on Flickr is the 365 portrait a day; whereby the member uploads a self-portrait a day for a year. An interesting concept; in theory it could be a little mundane but very few of them are. A favourite of mine is by Great Danes, as they also let us peep at their reject photos. They seem to capture something new in each photo, making a true fashionable statement each day. Just for fun, type in 365 to the Flickr search, see if you find something you like.
